Our Work – Newmarket Humes Mass Block Retaining Wall
Gulf Projects managed the replacement of a failed retaining wall on a steep, restricted-access site in Newmarket, Auckland.
The existing concrete retaining structures had failed, requiring the site and steep bank to be temporarily stabilised before excavation could proceed. Due to the terrain and confined working area, health and safety, temporary works and maintaining the stability of the bank were critical throughout construction.
Lander Geotechnical Consultants and MSC Consulting Group attended site at key stages throughout the works, providing ongoing review and sign-off as the excavation, bank stabilisation and retaining wall construction progressed. Auckland Council also carried out the required building consent inspections during the project, including foundation and final retaining wall inspections.
The new retaining structure was constructed using a Humes mass block retaining wall system, together with the required drainage and no-fines permeable concrete backfill in accordance with the engineering design.
Gulf coordinated the earthworks, temporary stabilisation, Humes block installation, lifting operations, health and safety requirements and engineering inspections through to completion.
